Eliminating Off-Note Impurities: Boweixin Bio Overcomes Technical Bottlenecks in Watermelon Ketone (CAS 28940-11-6) Industrial Synthesis

In 2019, driven by the explosive global demand for fresh aquatic notes, Watermelon Ketone (CAS 28940-11-6)—the defining marine fragrance ingredient—reached a peak in market demand. However, trace chemical byproducts from traditional industrial synthesis often leave Watermelon Ketone with an undesirable metallic off-note or harsh phenolic smell. To address this pain point, Boweixin Bio’s technical team, in collaboration with partner factories in the Central China fine chemical industrial belt, successfully overcame the bottlenecks in Watermelon Ketone’s industrial synthesis and purification.

The core of this technological breakthrough lies in the implementation of “High-Efficiency Phase Transfer Catalysis (PTC) Ring-Closure.” Rejecting traditional harsh alkaline and high-temperature conditions, our engineers introduced a milder catalytic system. This not only boosted the dietherification ring-closure yield to over 88% but also fundamentally suppressed the formation of polychlorinated byproducts and residual phenols. To eliminate olfactory impurities, the facility was upgraded with high-precision multi-stage molecular distillation and supercritical recrystallization equipment. Verified by Agilent Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), the purity of Watermelon Ketone produced via this new process consistently exceeds 99.5%.

“Odor integrity is the life of any fragrance ingredient. Even a trace impurity at 0.01% can ruin the delicate balance of a premium perfume,” stated the Technical Director of Boweixin Bio. Upon dilution, our upgraded Watermelon Ketone exhibits an airy, pristine sea breeze and juicy watermelon profile, completely free of plastic or chemical off-notes, rapidly securing purchase intents from top-tier European fragrance houses.
